Scientists prepared today for a mid‐course correction maneuver of the Viking 1, made necessary because of a helium leak aboard the spacecraft, which is rocketing toward Mars for a July 4 landing. The course change is scheduled for Tuesday. A spokesman for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory said Viking I was still expected to go into Mars orbit Saturday and begin surveying probable landing sites.
